Kopp offers encouragement concerning economy

In a recent e-mail to faculty and staff at Marshall University, President Stephen Kopp discussed his views and plans in response to Governor Joe Manchin’s sixth State of the State address and the annual report the university received from the governor.

Kopp explained the basics from Machin’s address, including that West Virginia is in good financial shape and is prepared to face the recession we currently face. Because of Manchin’s Executive Order instituting a mid-year 3.4 percent reduction in state appropriations, Kopp wants to ensure everyone involved with Marshall in any way that the university is well equipped to withstand these financial issues. Kopp said the university is examining every aspect of its campus in order to fulfill the goals of growth and success.

The university’s president then details some of the reasons Marshall will make it through these economic struggles, including the demand for healthcare professionals and our strong School of Medicine, efforts to attract more students for higher enrollment and the West Virginia Research Trust Fund being developed. Kopp also covered the achievements and saving the Sustainability Department has produced since September and the success of the Green Fee. Overall, Kopp wanted to encourage the Marshall University faculty and staff that efforts are being made to ensure the school’s adaptation to the economic downfalls the nation is facing.
