HUNTINGTON -- A new city program is designed to take young adults off the streets and jump-start their music careers, according to a press release.

"From the Streets to the Beats" is organized by the Huntington Police Department's Weed and Seed Program, which is funded with money from a federal grant. It is designed to battle violent crime, drug trafficking and drug-related crime in a designated high-crime area.

The program gives young adults access to weekly GED classes, life skills classes and state-of-the-art recording equipment. Organizers believe the audio equipment will provide participants a chance to cut a demo tape and press kit.

Successful participants also receive assistance with job training and placement, and also receive information about furthering their education at a college or technical school.

The Weed and Seed Program will host a kick-off party from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the A.D. Lewis Center. Free information, food and drinks will be provided, along with live entertainment by "M.C. Rhythm," "MOE" and "WIZDOM." Participants can also tour the Barnett Center and its facilities.
